Patreon's Pro plan looks cheaper on paper — 8% plus standard card processing (roughly 2.9% + $0.30) versus OnlyFans' flat 20%. But the fee comparison only matters if you can actually operate on Patreon in the first place, and for a lot of creators reading this comparison, that's the real question, not the percentage.

Content Policies
This is the defining difference between the two platforms. OnlyFans built its entire brand around allowing explicit adult content and remains the most recognizable name in that category. Patreon took the opposite path — its 2024 policy update banned sexually explicit content outright, driven largely by pressure from payment processors and app store requirements. Creators who relied on Patreon for adult content had to migrate to OnlyFans, Fansly, or elsewhere almost overnight.
What's left in the middle is a real gap: creators making suggestive, boudoir, lingerie, or cosplay content — not explicit, but not safe-for-work either — don't have a clean home on either platform. OnlyFans works but feels like overkill (and carries the platform-risk baggage of an adult-content brand), while Patreon's current rules leave that content in a gray zone that's increasingly enforced against.

Payment Processing
OnlyFans processes payments in-house, built specifically to support adult content — which is precisely why it can allow explicit material that mainstream processors won't touch. Patreon runs on Stripe and other standard processors, which is more stable and less prone to the payout disruptions the adult-content industry has periodically seen, but it also means Patreon's content rules are downstream of what those processors will allow, not a purely editorial decision by Patreon itself.

OnlyFans creators typically describe a grind built around constant fan engagement, DM sales, and content volume to prevent subscriber churn.
